Sequoia Capital Joins $25 Billion Anthropic Funding Round Amid AI Gold Rush
Sequoia Capital has entered the high-stakes race to fund Anthropic, participating in a $25 billion round that would more than double the AI company's valuation to $350 billion. The funding pool draws from a global consortium, including Singapore's GIC ($1.5 billion), Coatue ($1.5 billion), and a combined $15 billion from Microsoft and Nvidia. Venture funds and institutional investors are adding another $10 billion or more, with final allocations pending.
The MOVE marks a strategic pivot for Sequoia under new leadership. Former head Roelof Botha, who criticized oversaturation in Silicon Valley funding, was replaced in November by Pat Grady and Alfred Lin. The firm now backs multiple AI rivals—OpenAI, xAI, and now Anthropic—breaking traditional venture capital norms of single-sector bets. "This round redefines scale in private markets," remarked an insider.
